Great question! Generally speaking, I recommend Outline Camp if you’re still developing your story, need help turning your ideas into a workable plan, or have a messy draft that needs a full refresh. The Forge is ideal for ongoing accountability and editorial support to help you get your novel done. And if you have a finished draft and want personal feedback, a Big Picture Edit will give you a focused revision roadmap.

I work with a wide range of genre fiction, including fantasy, science fiction, romance, mystery, historical fiction, and thriller. The craft frameworks I teach are built to work across genres—because in my experience, while every genre has its own conventions, the fundamentals of good storytelling are universal.
That said, I do not currently work with horror, erotica, memoir, literary fiction, or any nonfiction. If you’re unsure whether we’re a good fit to work together, feel free to reach out using my contact form.

Most of The Novel Smithy’s programs are designed for writers who already have a story in progress and who have some experience with the writing craft—even if they’re stuck in the “messy first draft” phase.
If you’re totally new to writing, I’d recommend starting with my Resources page.
There you’ll find free tools, guides and templates, as well as my series of writing craft books. Those are an excellent starting point to help you learn more about plotting a novel, developing characters, and turning your ideas into a functioning story. I do! My Big Picture Edits are designed to give you a clear, focused revision plan for your novel. I’ll read your manuscript in full and identify the top 3-4 priorities that will make the biggest impact on your next draft.
A couple things worth noting: I specialize in developmental editing—think pacing, character, and genre. I don’t offer line editing or proofreading, though I’m happy to recommend you to other editors in those specialties. And because I can only offer a limited number of edits each quarter, spots fill up fast.

After working with so many writers, I’ve noticed that most writing advice boils down to following a checklist—fill in this formula, hit these beats in this order, et cetera. For a lot of writers, this approach makes sense in theory, but never in practice.
My method is different. I teach intuitive storytelling frameworks that give you the structure you need to write a successful novel, without boxing in your ideas. Think of it as a middle ground between planning every scene down to the minute and pantsing your way through a draft that never quite reaches “The End.”
Everything I teach is built from patterns I’ve observed across hundreds of manuscripts and years of editing. My goal is always to help you work with your creative brain, not against it.
